EVER HEARD THE PHRASE, "YOUR NETWORK IS YOUR NET WORTH"?
That couldn’t be truer during your internship. Internships are more than just a chance to gain hands-on experience—they're an opportunity to build meaningful professional relationships that can shape the rest of your career.
At AD&V, we believe that building genuine connections is a key component of professional growth. Here are five tips to help you make the most of your internship experience by cultivating strong relationships that last.
1. BE PROACTIVE & ENGAGED
Don’t wait for opportunities—create them. Introduce yourself, ask thoughtful questions, and show genuine curiosity about the work and the people around you.
Volunteer for projects, attend meetings and contribute ideas when appropriate. Just remember—being proactive also means being mindful. Look for the right moments to step in, avoid interrupting, and respect people’s time and workload.
When done thoughtfully, your initiative and enthusiasm will make a lasting and positive impression.
2. SEEK OUT MENTORSHIP
A great way to build strong relationships is by seeking guidance from experienced professionals. Identify mentors within the organization who can provide valuable insights and advice about your professional passions.
Engage with them regularly, request feedback, and ask how you can continue building and improving your skill sets. A strong mentor-mentee relationship can provide encouragement and direction long after your internship ends.
3. COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY & PROFESSIONALLY
Strong relationships are built on clear and respectful communication. Whether you're writing emails, speaking in meetings, or chatting informally, aim to be professional, attentive, and thoughtful.
Practice active listening, take notes during conversations, and follow up when needed. These habits will help you earn trust and credibility.
4. NETWORK BEYOND YOUR IMMEDIATE TEAM
While it’s important to connect with your direct team, expanding your network within the organization can open new doors. Consider reaching out to someone in another department for a quick coffee chat—you’ll gain fresh perspectives and build broader connections within the company.
Networking also allows you to observe different communication styles, understand how various teams operate, and learn from diverse experiences.
5. SHOW APPRECIATION & STAY IN TOUCH
A simple “thank you” can go a long way. Express genuine gratitude for the support, guidance, and feedback you receive during your internship.
Once your internship ends, keep in touch through LinkedIn, email, or occasional check-ins. Share small wins, career milestones, and how your internship experience contributed to them. These thoughtful gestures help keep your professional relationships active, meaningful, and long-lasting.
BUILD CONNECTIONS THAT LAST
Internships are stepping stones, but the relationships you build along the way can carry you forward for years. By being proactive, seeking mentorship, communicating effectively, networking, and showing appreciation, you’ll be planting the seeds for long-term professional success.
At AD&V, we encourage our interns to embrace every opportunity to grow—and that includes connecting with the people around them.
