Internships can open doors and prepare you for your professional career.

In some cases, being considered for a job depends largely on how you performed and grew during your internship program and whether you made a positive impression during the experience. Here are six ways you can stand out as an intern and make a lasting impression:

1. EMBRACE FEEDBACK

Internships are growth opportunities, so embrace your mistakes and learn from them. Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback and show your supervisor you’re eager to grow by addressing initial areas of improvement. Feedback is the key to helping you progress and succeed throughout your career, and it demonstrates your eagerness to better yourself in the role, which is very valuable.

2. ASK QUESTIONS

Take advantage of your position and ask questions about anything and everything that you don’t understand or things that you may not be sure how to do. We believe that interns who ask questions are motivated and really want to learn all they can about the industry or their position.

3. GO THE EXTRA MILE

If you find that you’re finished with your assigned work, ask your supervisor for new projects, or take time to learn more about the company you’re working for. Set SMART goals you want to achieve during the internship and keep yourself accountable. Going the distance will demonstrate dedication and goal setting will help ensure that you gain the relevant skills employers are seeking when hiring future full-time employees.

4. TAKE INITIATIVE

Think about new ways the company you’re interning at can work smarter and improve their performance. Maybe there are software tools that can allow for better team collaboration or maybe you can come up with a new process that will help with the office workflow. Take the initiative and bring your ideas and suggestions to your team. This will show that you are an asset!

5. BECOME PART OF THE TEAM

Make an effort to get to know your fellow co-workers and become part of the team. Have lunch with them, learn about their experience at the company, and ask for any words of wisdom. This will help you build rapport with the team and will also let them see that you have an honest interest in the company.

6. BE UP TO ANY CHALLENGE

Keep in mind that in any work experience in the real world there will be challenges. It’s perfectly normal to be afraid at first, but when you embrace the experience of tackling new challenges that may be out of your comfort zone, you will develop new skills. The more diverse tasks you are able and willing to do, the more you will learn.

MAKING THE BEST OF IT

Internships are a great learning experience and when you take advantage of the opportunity by embracing feedback, asking questions, going the extra-mile, and becoming a team player, employers will definitely notice you and want to help you succeed.
